When you log into your Gmail or Google account, that also signs you into many of Google's products including the Chrome browser. So even if you didn't actively sign into Chrome, you might have already.
Why You Might Want to Sign Out of Chrome
It's important to log out of Chrome and other programs when using a public computer or even a friend or family member’s since the browser stores an array of private information which can include credit card numbers, passwords, browsing history, and more.
You might also want to log out of Chrome before letting someone else borrow your device since the autofill on the browser search bar can also be revealing, showing your search history. Just type “what is” into your search bar and see what it fills in (it’s likely to be at least a little embarrassing).
Finally, since you can log into multiple devices at once, it’s good to do an audit of where you’re signed in, such as an old work computer or a device you no longer own.
Here’s how to sign out of Chrome whether you have access to the device or not.
Sign Out of Chrome on Your Desktop or Smartphone
On a computer, you can sign out of Chrome, and your Google account, from most Google websites (look for your Google profile photo on the top right of the page) or by opening a blank tab.
From a blank tab, click your profile photo on the top right, then click Sign out. To sign out from your smartphone:
- Tap the More menu (three vertical dots) on the top right of any webpage.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap your profile picture at the top of the Settings page.
- Tap Sign out of Chrome.
Turn Off Syncing for Chrome
Another method is to turn off sync, which backs up a range of data to your Gmail address, such as browser extensions, passwords, browsing history, and bookmarks. While it’s convenient to carry this information from device to device, you can turn this functionality off, or limit the types of data that are saved.
- From any tab in Chrome, click the More menu (three vertical dots) on the top right next to the search bar.
- Click Settings.(Mobile and Desktop Compatible). Online Business Law Exam workshopComplete Seperate Course on your State Specific Business Law Exam. Contractors license test dates california. This shows you exactly where to highlight your books and what to focus on, skipping anything that doesn't pertain to the test. Online Trades Exam workshop for each book. This includes:.
Disabling sync also signs you out of Google Account services.
You can also turn off syncing for Chrome from your smartphone.
- Tap the More menu (three vertical dots) on the top right of any webpage.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap your profile picture at the top of the Settings page.
- Tap Sync.
Turn Off Chrome Sign-In
When you sign in to your Google Account from any app, such as Gmail or Google Drive, you’re automatically signed in to Chrome by default. If you don’t want this to happen, you can adjust the settings on your computer.
- Open Chrome.
- At the top right, click the More menu > Settings.
- At the bottom of the screen, click Advanced.
- Under Privacy and security, turn off Allow Chrome sign-in.
- Disabling sign-in also turns off sync.
Log Out of Chrome Remotely
Finally, it’s possible that you’ve signed into Chrome on one or more devices that you don’t have access to anymore. Luckily, you can remotely sign out of Chrome from your computer by removing access to it.
When you remove access from Chrome, that signs you out of any computer or device you’ve used, including the one you’re using now. You can allow access again next time you launch Chrome.
- Scroll down to Google apps and click Google Chrome.
- Click Remove access.
If you’re a heavy internet traveler, signing into Chrome is one of the most convenient features available on an internet-capable device. Just by entering your Gmail login and password into your browser, you can access all of your bookmarks, navigation history, extensions, and settings from any computer, phone, or tablet that has Chrome. However, if you use a friend’s device or one that belongs to your place of work, you might have signed into Chrome without remembering to sign out at the end of the session. That means next time your friend or a coworker uses Chrome, they can snoop your embarrassing browser history, and generally access things you wouldn’t necessarily want them to.
Instead of alerting your friends or coworkers that your unsettling browser history is available, you can clandestinely force other devices to log out of Chrome from the safety of your dark room. Saints row 2 unlimited respect. It’s simple, but the option is somewhat buried.
How to keep others from knowing your shame
- Head over to Gmail.com and log in.
- Scroll down to the bottom, and in the right-hand corner, you’ll see some text in a small font that says “Last account activity.” Underneath that is a link marked “Details.” Click that.
- This will invoke an Activity Information window, which shows you which devices are currently logged into Chrome, their IP addresses and type of activity, and how long ago they were used.
- Click the “Sign out all other sessions” button toward the top of the page.

Now, every device logged into your Chrome account will be logged out, except the one you used to force the other devices out. If you’re worried about your login and password being saved on those logged-out devices, you should now change your password. Easy peasy. Now you can go back the dark corners of the internet you really don’t want your friends and coworkers to know about.

In the past, I could refuse to sign in to chrome - and still be able to use, for example, gmail. I would just select the tiny 'skip' link when presented with the sign in window.
With the latest version of chrome it seems this option has been removed. Now as soon as I sign in to gmail, chrome automatically signs in as well into the same account. If I sign out from under 'people' in chrome settings, I am automatically signed out from gmail.
I do not want to sign in to chrome; I do not want chrome to associate everything I do in my browser with my account. Yet, I do have to use gmail and docs (it's a corporate account, I don't have a choice).
How can I keep using gmail without signing in to chrome?

After so much wasted time, I found the answer in this blog post:
Navigate to chrome://flags/#account-consistency and switch the Identity consistency between browser and cookie jar flag to 'Disabled'. Relaunch chrome - and you're set.

In Chrome 70:
Go to
⋮
>Settings
>Advanced
>Privacy and security
and disable Allow Chrome sign-in
.Allow Chrome sign-in
By turning this off, you can sign in to Google sites like Gmail without signing in to Chrome

Chrome doesn't sign you in when you log in to Gmail, it just detects that you're signed in and displays your account picture. It was verified by Polish website Niebezpiecznik. They have tried to sign in to a fresh install of Chrome on a pristine OS. My rough translation:
On our office computers, even though our Google avatars appeared in the top right corner of browser's window, we weren't automatically signed in into Google accounts:
So we've checked everything on a fresh install of Google Chrome on a clean OS and we've confirmed that when user signs in eg. into Gmail, they won't be signed in into Google Chrome until they click 'Sign in to Chrome' and enter their Google accout password again.
To confirm their results, I have just installed Windows 10 in a virtual machine. Then I installed latest Chrome, navigated to gmail.com and signed in. Results:
- I'm signed in to all Google sites
- Chrome is showing my picture in top right corner
- When I click it, it indeed looks like I'm signed in
- But it's just misleading design - the large blue thing is a button that turns on sync
- Settings actually look a bit clearer, there's also a blue button there, but it's smaller
- Clicking the blue button enables sync. Until then, it's disabled.
Avatar menu just after signing into Gmail, with the misleading blue button visible:
Settings just after signing into Gmail, with account name displayed, but with a smaller 'Sync as [Your Name]' blue button:
An 'You've turned on Sync' confirmation dialog that appears after clicking either blue button:
