Description of Tracon: Air Traffic Control Simulator
Tracon and Tracon II are two classic ATC games from Wesson, years before their efforts culminated in Tower. The description at MobyGames says it all about this pair of pioneers in aviation software:
![]()
'Tracon is an air traffic control simulator, giving you the position of a so called 'ATC' (air traffic controller). You are in charge of the air traffic in a certain sector, making sure that every airplane gets to his destination safely. Your main screen is a radar, which features the aircrafts as green dots or little airplanes, moving at a certain speed at a certain height. The game is a full-talkie, featuring pilot's voices and those of the ATCs. Interestingly Tracon doesn't use a sound card for that. The voice acting is done over the PC internal speaker.
The more traffic is in the air, the more hectic your job becomes. You have to set routes for the planes and organize punctual arrivals. The game is also featuring emergencies, to make your task more difficult. It is possible to connect the game to a Microsoft Flight Simulator installation on another computer. Tracon was used to train professional ATCs in the early nineties. Then Wesson decided to develop special simulation units for professional users and continue the Tracon series as entertainment.'

Compared to the Windows version (also reviewed on this site), these older DOS versions are arguably more realistic (or at least more difficult in my opinion) - although their interface are naturally less intuitive than their Windows successor. If you like ATCs in general, Tracon and Tracon II are must-haves: classic games in the niche genre that remain highly playable even more than a decade later. Two thumbs up!

In the folder there is a readme, or should be..it lists the approach altitude for various places..print this.. In the game Vector the aircraft to the faf for ils at the correct altitude and hand them off to the tower..

Approach with caution.
ATC Simulator is probably the hardest hardcore simulation you’ll play, an unsurprising fact considering the real job isn’t a walk in the park either. That is its greatest strength and its most serious weakness. It assumes that you have the time, patience, and desire to meet it on its own terms. It makes no concessions; it won’t hold your hand; it takes no prisoners. And it almost dares you to have any fun.
It places you in front of a radar screen in a TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach CONtrol) station. You begin by selecting a major U.S. airports (called “sectors” in the parlance of the trade). You can choose from three levels of responsibility: Approach Controller, Departure Controller, or a hellishly challenging combination of both. All aircraft types, flight numbers, and schedules are real, as are the variations of surrounding terrain from one hub to another. Each scenario comprises a one-hour block of time, from 0600 to 2300, your choice.
Aerosoft has recreated the look and layout of a TRACON control panel with the utmost fidelity. Cut down the lights, adjust your speech-recognition headset, and you’ll experience a very convincing illusion. That’s assuming you can get the speech-recognition system to work, which is useful bit not necessary to use (you can type in commands, which isn’t all that fun).
Indeed, unless you’re actually training to be an Air Traffic Controller, the spartan rigors of ATCS’s design actually make the program seem colder than it needs to be. There is no feedback to make things interesting; no bad weather, no sudden wind shear dangers, no mechanical emergencies, no UFOs. Perhaps this ‘game’ might be more worthwhile if it gave you a monthly paycheck for ‘playing’ it, but since it doesn’t it feels more like an unpaid job than software meant to entertain players.

Review title of JENNIFERMOST CONDUSIVE OF ALL
PROS: 1. Simiplicity 2. No ham handed 'artificial intelligence' rigging you to fail, in an attempt to give a look of difficulty. Maybe this so because in this game there are no purchases CONS: 1. Maybe its too simply 2. Maybe to cheaply increase difficulty while still keeping it simple: increase number of aircraft landed to move from one level to the other, maybe also increase the number of levels. 3. I think it would be a lot more appealing to add Special Effects sounds (Aircraft sounds, etc). I have always opted to either kill the background music or have it turned down inaudiably low. So yeah, give me SE sounds anyday, anytime, almost any game. BGM are always so monotonious that after a while they drive you crazy anyways. 4. One quite annoying thing though, is ads running after you've clicked to start a new level and the game not being paused while they run. So, for all the games in this genre I have tried (and I have tried a 'few'), this is the one I intend to keep. But thinks i
